Afropunk - A Mosaic of Black Excellence!
Global warming is definitely in effect; as a result, the summer has been all over the place. But you know black culture, we got to keep traditions going! We still gonna have our cookouts, Juneteenth celebrations, and one of our most recent installments…. attending Afropunk. Now if you don’t know…. here ya go, lol.
Afropunk is an annual festival that celebrates art, culture, and music; a whole beautiful collaboration of black excellence! The Afropunk festival started in Brooklyn, New York in 2005. And naturally, Afropunk has become a movement. A movement that has even gone global. You can find Afropunk festivals in places like Paris, London, Johannesburg, and Atlanta, Georgia.
This year I have the pleasure of attending Afropunk at one of my own stomping grounds, where it all started, BROOKLYN baby! This year’s festival will be the weekend of August 25th thru 26th 2018 with a lineup that includes Janelle Monae, Jaden Smith, and Erykah Badu to name a few. The lineup is a combination of legends and new comers. I was already warned that the food truck situation is “crazy”!!! There is also an awesomely ridiculous number of vendors. However, the coolest thing about Afropunk to me, is the beautiful array of people that show up, from a brotha in a hoody and Timbs to another dude in leather pants, platforms and, tribal tattoos. The environment represents the mosaic of black culture; and I’m here for it!
I will be attending with my bestie of 10 years and we plan to act a fool, lol. Expect many pictures to follow, and maybe even some interesting stories in upcoming blogs. We are prepared to experience all the Wakandaness that is Afropunk lol. Make sure you check out our mini adventure on I.G (@theroyalbash) and on our site, www.theroyalbash.com!!! See you there, fam!
